B.C. health employers association reaches tentative agreement with Community Health Bargaining Association

Staffing measures and paycheck increases are set to be among the new tentative agreement reached by the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) and members of the Community Health Bargaining Association (CBA).

After about a year of negotiations, the president of HEABC says she is thankful that the groups are dedicated to improving working conditions in the province.

“The agreement includes fair wage increases and measures to address staffing and workload challenges,” Michael McMillan said in a statement.

“A tentative agreement that will both improve conditions for employees and provide better services for patients, clients and residents of BC’s health care system,” McMillan added.

The agreement covers about 21,700 health care support workers, in settings ranging from private homes, group homes, child development centres and health authorities throughout the province.

In a news release from the Ministry of Finance, it explains the agreement comes as part of the government’s plan “to improve public service and the health-care system, while supporting the Province’s continued economic recovery for all.”

“Community health workers make up the largest classification group in this subsector. Community health workers are employed to provide home-support services through contracted agencies and directly for the Province’s health authorities.”

The terms of the agreement will be made public once the ratification process is complete.
