‘Feels like spring’: Metro Vancouver sees record-breaking temps over weekend

The weekend brought Metro Vancouver a little break from the rain, as well as some record temperatures for January.
Conditions across the region on Saturday were sunny and warmer than usual. CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says the previous record high set at YVR of 13.3 set in 1968 was broken as the mercury rose to 13.8 degrees.
“We are going to get back to seasonal this week, but what a weekend it was and it was nice to see some dry conditions on Saturday. That was a record setter at YVR and White Rock — close to a record in West Vancouver and a number of other readings up in there in that record range,” he explained Monday.
Many people took advantage of the spring-like conditions, heading outdoors for activities and to take in the sunshine and warmth around Vancouver.
Some across the region also took to social media to share their surprise.
“A gorgeous day in #Vancouver. Feels like Spring on January 14th,” one person tweeted. “Bought flowers for the balcony! Still surprising for a girl from #Winnipeg.”

“The #spring vibe is alive today in Metro #Vancouver’s #PortMoody,” another person wrote.
“I know its probably just false Spring but man it’s gorgeous in Vancouver today!” a third person said on Twitter, noting they didn’t even need a jacket for their walk.
However, the warmth didn’t do any favours for the local mountains. Images online of some runs on the North Shore show patches of dirt where there normally would be thick layers of snow for skiiers and snowboarders to enjoy.
But the upcoming forecast may deal with some of those concerns.
“It looks like, at least for the time being, the record heat and the string of double-digit highs, that’s done for a while. Temperatures are working back toward seasonal this week, which still means rain or at least some showers across the area, and some mountain snow — good news for the local ski hills,” Kuss said.
Despite the short reprieve from winter and rain, temperatures were more typical for this time of year Sunday, cooling down slightly.
