“Many animals perished” Surrey’s Urban Safari Rescue Society closed after fire

An animal rescue in Surrey says dozens of its animals are dead after a fire over the weekend. Monika Gul speaks to the Urban Safari Rescue Society about how the community is stepping up to help.

The Urban Safari Rescue Society in Surrey is closed until further notice due to a fire Saturday night.

The rescue society, sitting along 176th street, is a non-profit dedicated to the rescue and care of exotic animals and to educating the public about animals.

A Facebook post from the society says the building is fairly damaged and its insurance doesn’t cover anything at this point.

“We are still in triage mode. There is significant damage to the front area of the building. We have met with the insurance adjuster and the emergency crew started the air scrubbing fans this afternoon. The fire started when the power came back on at some point last night. It came back with a surge that overpowered the surge protector that was powering a snake tank.”
