As of Tuesday, single-use plastic bags are no longer be given out at Shoppers Drug Mart stores across the country.
They’re just the latest company to transition away from these products, asking customers to bring their own reusable bags for their shopping needs.
While customers are encouraged to bring their own, the company notes reusable alternatives will also be available for purchase.
The move comes after Canada announced in December it would ban the production and importation of most single-use plastics in an effort to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030.
Shoppers Drug Mart says it has also committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, though its timeline sets the deadline as 2040 for “scope 1 and 2.”
It says it is also working toward reducing plastic waste by moving to reusable or recyclable packaging by 2025.
