B.C.’s former premier appears to be stepping down from his role as MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca.
John Horgan indicated his plans in a speech delivered at the legislature today. Following the session, he told reporters he intends to step down next month.
He also mentioned during his speech that he is healthy and cancer-free following his 2021 diagnosis.
Horgan was the longest-serving NDP premier in the province’s history.
While the former premier indicated his plans, nothing is official quite yet. Due to the technicalities of house rules, Horgan still has to officially announce his resignation.
“I have tried over 18 years of this place as an MLA, 30 years working here, 63 years drawing breath, trying to make it better every day,” he said during his speech.
In June 2022, Horgan announced he would step down as premier, citing his dwindling energy at the end of long days.
That paved the way for a BC NDP leadership race, which was eventually won by now-premier David Eby.
Horgan was first elected as an MLA for Juan de Fuca in 2005 and was re-elected three times. In 2014, he became the leader of the BC NDP.
