Vancouver sketch-comedy duo sells out Just For Laughs show

Since launching their new podcast last year, a Vancouver-based sketch comedy duo says they’ve seen a new level of success, and are performing to a sold-out show at this year’s Just For Laughs festival.

Ryan Steele and Amy Goodmurphy have been popular sketch comedians in Vancouver and recently began their podcast, “Poor Lil Thing.”

“Poor Lil Thing came from a phrase that we would say: ‘you’re a poor little thing,’ just about being an embarrassing human, which we basically all are,” Goodmurphy told CityNews.

“I think since having done the podcast that was sort of the reach we’ve been missing all this time.”

Their podcast features comedic bits between the duo, as well as some interviews with notable people from the world of comedy.

“I think doing the podcast has really brought a lot more Ryan and Amy as themselves into people’s lives and we want to bring that into our live show now,” explained Steele.

On Thursday, the duo will be performing in front of a sold-out crowd at the Fox Cabaret as part of the Just For Laughs Vancouver festival.

“It feels amazing,” said Goodmurphy. “Any comedian, or artist, or creative is going to understand how long it takes to truly sort of find any type of success, let alone monetary success.”

The live show, the duo explains, will feature some familiar characters, along with some new material.

“If you’ve come to a Ryan and Amy show before, we have a couple of middle-aged women that are our two most popular characters and fans can expect to see them there,” said Steele.

“Let’s just say we’re going to dive back into the past and dig up some things that we’ve never shared before,” Goodmurphy added.

“Poor Lil Thing” can be heard on all podcast platforms, and the Just For Laughs Vancouver festival runs until Feb. 25.
