Tofino, B.C. seeing mass power outages

The surfing town of Tofino, B.C. is experiencing power outages in nearly the entire district after being hit with a major snow storm.
According to a public notice from the District of Tofino, the power outages began last night around 10:30 p.m., with the District activating it’s Emergency Operations Centre shortly after.
The outages are accompanied by a warning to reduce unnecessary water use to conserve their supply for fire-related emergencies. This water warning is at a stage 4 water restriction level, meaning water is only to be used for drinking and sanitation purposes. As a result of a water system failure, the restriction came into play, in which the District’s downtown water reservoirs are dropping by two per cent every 30 minutes.

A warming centre is currently open at Tofino’s community hall, where the District encourages locals and tourists to stop by the heated space for snacks and warm drinks.
The District says it is working with B.C. Hydro on troubleshooting the overall power outage issue, and estimates it will be resolved by Sunday night at 8 p.m.
