BC Ferries passenger fares could change

Inflation and a possible recession next year could lead to a change in fares for passengers, according to BC Ferries.
The ferry service has submitted a revised four year plan to the independent BC Ferries Commissioner.
This plan charts out a course over turbulent waters for the corporation, as it faces the risk of a recession, an aging fleet, and a dwindling workforce.
The ferry corporation says it expects higher costs and less travel demand in 2024, forcing it to making some tough budgeting decisions.
A $500 million commitment came from Premier David Eby and the province in late February of this year, this funding was aimed at “the lowering of fare increases for people who rely upon the coastal ferry service.”

The ferry corporation is already being impacted by staffing shortages, saying that between April and November of 2022, 679 sailings were cancelled because of crew shortages.
BC Ferries is planning to bring on 500 new staff members to deal with the issue, adding they’ve brought on more than 1,100 new employees in the last 12 months.
