B.C. teacher threatens to ‘rip out vocal chords,’ sanctioned

A teacher on Vancouver Island is facing sanctions over several misconduct complaints related to comments he reportedly made to kids in classes ranging from Grade 3 to Grade 7.

The instances are said to have happened in 2021.

In one case, the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation says the teacher told a bus full of Grade 3 students he would “rip out their vocal cords and throw them out the window” if they started yelling.

The teacher was also reprimanded for shaming a Grade 7 student for their clothing, saying, “You have your bra hanging out and people are going to look at you,” following a brief interaction between that student and another.

In another case, the teacher is said to have told the parent of a Grade 3 student that if the child tried to get physical with him he would “block it” and the student “may get hurt.”

The teacher “then gestured with his arm,” the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation report reads.

The agency says the teacher “admits that the facts set out” are true, adding he also agrees that some of his conduct “constitutes professional misconduct.”

As part of his reprimand, the commissioner says the teacher has agreed to complete a “Creating a Positive Learning Environment” course by the end of March 2023. If he does not complete the course or if he “fails to provide satisfactory proof of completion,” he may lose his licence.
