New Westminster vehicle crash claims one life

One person has died Wednesday morning in New Westminster after a crash just before 7 a.m.

New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) says the fatal crash involved only one vehicle on East 8th Avenue between Richmond and East Columbia streets.

Police say the crash caused a local power outage, with city crews on the scene working to restore power.

Neighbouring residents and motorists are being urged by police to take extra safety precautions, as live wires are downed at the scene.

The BC Coroners Service and the Integrated Collision Analysis Reconstruction Service (ICARS) have been notified, NWPD says.

“Police are in the early stages of this investigation,” stated Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “If you witnessed this collision or have dash-cam footage please reach out to police.”

The NWPD Major Crime Unit can be contacted at 604-529-2430.
