British Columbia’s former premier has set an end date for his time as a politician during his final public appearance as an elected official.
At a news conference on Thursday in Sooke, John Horgan says his last day as MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca will be March 31.
“As I leave, it has been the honour of my life to serve this great community,” he said. “I am so proud after 18 years, and 12 … awful years as an opposition member.”

Horgan holds the title as B.C.’s longest-serving NDP premier, holding the job from 2017 to 2022. He has worked in the B.C. legislature for 30 years.
Last year, the 63-year-old announced he was stepping down from the job, and last month announced he would be resigning from his seat in the legislature.
He had completed treatment for throat cancer earlier in 2022, which was his second battle with cancer in his lifetime.
As for what’s next, Horgan joked that he no longer has to share that information.
“I don’t have to tell you,” he said with a laugh. “I’m not falling off the Earth, I’m just not answering your questions anymore.”
Once Horgan vacates his seat, a by-election must be held within six months. It won’t be the only by-election held for an NDP MLA leaving their seat. Last month, Melanie Mark announced she too will be leaving provincial politics.
