Vancouver police are urging you to keep an eye on your belongings, with warnings about distraction thefts rising in the warmer months.
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says such thefts continue to be a problem in the city, and as temperatures rise in the coming weeks, so too will thefts of this kind.
“In Vancouver, distraction thefts increase during the summer months. They can be difficult to investigate, as the thieves are usually long gone before the victim realizes what has happened,” the VPD said.

Seniors in residential areas are typically targeted, police say, adding suspects tend to surprise or distract victims in order to steal jewelry, money, or other items of value.
The VPD says examples can involve a stranger stopping you and starting to touch you, either grabbing your arms or wrists, or to give you a hug.
“You may be surprised by this behaviour, and during the encounter you might not notice the thief removing your jewelry or valuables.”
Police are advising people to not let strangers into their house or personal space, to remain vigilant, and if you’re feeling like you may be the target of theft, to make a lot of noise and try to attract attention.
“In almost all cases, the thieves are travelling in a car with others, and they quickly leave in the car after the theft. Sometimes, they may also have a small child or baby with them,” police say.
