Surrey bus stabbing leaves 17-year-old dead, homicide team called in

A 17-year-old is dead after a stabbing Tuesday night on a Surrey bus. Sarah Chew speaks to a forensic psychologist about the rise in crime on transit across the country.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called to Surrey after a teenager was stabbed on a bus Tuesday night.

According to the Surrey RCMP, officers received reports of an “assault with a weapon” on board a Coast Mountain bus in the area of King George Boulevard and 100th Avenue just before 9:30 p.m.

Mounties say a 17-year-old boy was found with life-threatening injuries, and was taken to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services. Police confirm he has since died.

Mounties said Tuesday night there was an “altercation” between two people on the bus.

This incident is not believed to have any links to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict.

The stabbing resulted in the closure of the southbound lanes of King George Boulevard between 100th Avenue and 98A Avenue for several hours. The road has since reopened.

This is just the latest violent incident to unfold on Metro Vancouver transit in recent weeks.

On April 1, there was a random slashing on a Surrey bus that led to terrorism-related charges. Last weekend, there were assaults reported on the Millennium Line in Burnaby, with an attempted slashing of an officer.

Then, just days ago, there was a stabbing at the Columbia SkyTrain Station in New Westminster that left one person with stomach injuries.

Cpl. Vanessa Munn with the Surrey RCMP says the two recent stabbings on public transit in the city are “disturbing.”

“While the incidents are not related and the circumstances surrounding the events differ greatly, we recognize these violent acts can generate fear in our community,” she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

She adds Mounties will be “upping” patrols alongside Metro Vancouver Transit Police in light of the recent violence.

“We are still in the early stages of the investigation,” said Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. “Investigators are asking any witnesses who have yet to speak with police, to contact IHIT immediately.”

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file# 23-55729, or IHIT using the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
