BC Hydro says a pilot project that offered free parking reservations at Buntzen Lake will be returning this summer.
Last year, an online system for free parking reservations was launched as a pilot for the popular recreation area. The utility says the program reduced traffic congestion by 10 per cent in nearby Anmore.
The program is returning next month with some modifications, the company announced Thursday. BC Hydro says the updates include the introduction of user accounts on the platform, which will be verified through a QR code at the parking lot’s gate.

This is meant to reduce the number of no-shows to the park, which the utility says made up one-third of reservations last year. This year, those who do not show up for their reservation may have their account suspended.
Port Moody-Coquitlam MLA Rick Glumac welcomes the new system, as Buntzen Lake receives over 200,000 visitors each year.
“The reservation system proved to be effective last year in eliminating long waits for parking spots. With some new improvements, people will once again be able to use the system to plan their visit to Buntzen Lake,” he said in a media release.
Mayor of Anmore, John McEwan, says the program’s improvement will allow for more convenience and accountability at the park.
“The reservation system for Buntzen Lake was a game changer for our community as it helped alleviate some of the traffic congestion and safety issues our community has experienced in the last few years,” he said.
The online parking reservation system will open on May 15 and will be available until Sept. 4.
