Vancouver’s Chinatown, cultural sectors to see new funds

More than $3.4 million in grants have been approved by council to support Vancouver’s arts and cultural sector with part of the funding set aside to help revitalize the city’s Chinatown neighbourhood.

On Tuesday, city council announced the funds, adding $1.1 million will go toward enhancing “Chinatown’s cultural vibrancy.”

“This significant investment reinforces our commitment to fostering vibrancy through arts, culture, and heritage within the city,” said Mayor Ken Sim.

“With a substantial focus on revitalizing Chinatown, we are taking bold strides towards preserving and enhancing the cultural heritage of this community and ensuring that it can be a vibrant, prosperous neighbourhood for generations to come.”

The city says the money will also support transforming the Wing Sang building into the future Chinese Canadian Museum, along with the Chinese Canadian Museum Society of British Columbia.

In addition, the city is investing in nearly 80 organizations to help foster “artistic creation, community-engaged art practices, and vibrant celebrations.”
