People around north Burnaby are being told a bear that triggered a warning Thursday has since “made it back to the woods.”
The RCMP issued a notice just after 11:30 a.m., saying it was “tracking” a bruin in the area north of Hastings Street and west of Willingdon Avenue.
“Please be safe and do not approach the bear,” a tweet from the RCMP reads.
Bear in the area!
We are tracking a bear in the area north of Hastings Street & west of Willingdon Avenue.

However, an update followed about an hour and a half later, with Mounties thanking people for “spreading the word.”
Bear sightings are not uncommon for the area and city. Burnaby has designated “bear areas,” which include “Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby Lake, Deer Lake, Robert Burnaby Park and other parklands.”
Locals are being reminded to take steps to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
That includes securing garbage and green bins, and removing attractants like bird feeders, ripe fruits, and pet food from properties.
People are also reminded to report bear sightings to the BC Conservation Officer Service.
