Metro Vancouver gas prices breach $2/litre

Drivers might be waking up to a hit to the back pocket Friday morning, as gas prices across Metro Vancouver move past the $2 per litre mark.
With many stations in the region showing $2.04 for a litre of regular gas, analysts say the price jump is because of a surge in demand and a shortage of gasoline in the Pacific Northwest region.
A man filling up his Honda Civic at 152nd Street in Surrey Friday morning told CityNews that as an Uber driver, paying $2 per litre “hurts.”
“My first car in April [2020], I was paying almost 80 cents because of COVID,” he said.

He says it’s a far cry from that now, and it’s much harder to make a living as a driver.
“Because of the promotions going on with Uber, we don’t get that much to make it work. So, maybe we have to switch to other vehicles or stuff, but regular gas vehicles — it’s not worth it these days.”
Others filling up at the same gas station point to the availability of much cheaper gas in other parts of the country, complaining that it’s just much more expensive to fill up in B.C.
“I think it’s crazy. Because, if our wages went up with the price of everything, it’d be different. But if you want to get gas, you got to have a credit card or whatever because you can’t afford it,” one woman told CityNews.
She says she remembers filling up her little compact car for $30 a tank years ago, and now it’s around the $90 mark.
“I work, I live alone, and I pay for everything. These gas prices are astronomical.”
Friday sees the highest gas prices in Metro Vancouver since November 2022, and the latest predictions from analysts suggest prices for a litre of regular will hit $2.20 in B.C. over the summer.
“I think it’s crazy! It’s outrageous!”
“These gas prices are crazy, especially considering I compare them with the Interior and Ontario because I have family that lived there. “We’re 30 cents more than the Interior,” she said.
