Chilliwack teacher banned from teaching for 10 years after inappropriate conduct

A former teacher in Chilliwack has been banned from teaching for 10 years after numerous reports of inappropriate comments and relations he had with students, a disciplinary decision states.

According to a British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation report released Tuesday, Erik Chadsey has been forbidden from obtaining a new teacher’s license in B.C. for at least a decade due to numerous incidents outlined over a span of over 30 years.

Chadsey is said to have been licensed as a high school teacher in the Chilliwack School District in 1987 and taught in the region until 2021. The commissioner’s report outlines instances between 2017 and 2019 where he had inappropriate discussions with his students.

In one case outlined in the report, Chadsey is said to have asked his students to tell a story about their first kiss or breaking up with a partner. Although answering the question was said to have been optional, the report states that students felt pressured to answer. This is said to have led to a student telling sexually explicit stories while Chadsey did nothing to stop the conversation.

The high school teacher is also said to have shared “age-inappropriate stories” about himself with students while also using “age-inappropriate language.” It is also alleged that Chadsey played inappropriate videos, and mimicked foreign accents and physical ticks in front of his class.

The report also states that on three occasions between 1988 and 1993, Chadsey had “physical encounters” with recently graduated female students.

If Chadley ever wants to reapply for his teaching license, he’ll have to face a review from the Commissioner.
