New Westminster school board asks trustee to resign

New Westminster school trustee Dee Beattie has been asked to resign.

This comes after parent James Plett told CityNews he and his wife — among others within the local school community — were being harassed by a Twitter account under the name Allan Whitterstone. Plett said he and his wife believed the account was being run by Beattie.

According to a statement from Community First, a political party Beattie was a member of, she admitted to the allegations.

“Late Wednesday evening, Community First received serious allegations against Trustee Dee Beattie. In the course of our investigating this matter, Dee Beattie admitted to the conduct. Our Executive has accepted her resignation from Community First this evening,” said Community First Chair Cheryl Greenhalgh.

New Westminster School Board Chair Maya Russell says she met with the board Friday and is asking Beattie quit her position immediately.

Russell calls Beattie’s actions “absolutely unacceptable for someone in public office” and says her conduct “runs contrary to the District’s foundational values: collaboration, engagement, inclusion, innovation, and integrity.”

“The Board is deeply disturbed by the conduct and the harm this has caused to individuals in our community and to public confidence in our District,” reads the board’s statement.

Beattie has since deactivated her Twitter account. The account under the name Allan Whitterstone has been deactivated as well.
