Burnaby to get almost 1,500 ‘affordable’ homes: Eby

B.C. Premier David Eby announced a new housing development in Burnaby Monday afternoon.

Calling Burnaby one of the “fastest-growing cities” in the province, Eby says the government will be meeting that demand by spending about $253 million to build close to 1,500 affordable homes.

“We’re working with the City of Burnaby and other partners to build about 1,500 new affordable homes, including some specifically for Indigenous people, seniors facing homelessness, families with low incomes, and people living with disabilities. The addition of these homes will be key to help people in Burnaby who are searching for affordable housing,” he said.

Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon says Burnaby was a “key partner” in getting this project going and filling a need for more homes in Metro Vancouver.

“People love living and working in B.C. It’s why we are seeing unprecedented immigration levels and the demand shows in Burnaby. That’s why we’re bringing nearly 1,500 affordable rental homes to the people who want to live in the community they know and love,” he said.

The province released stats on the new home development projects coming in the near future.

390 housing units are currently under construction and are expected to be finished by 2025 or 2026, 790 are in the development stage, and 305 are “expected to start construction by late 2023.”

The province has confirmed projects at 7392 16th Avenue, 6889 Royal Oak Avenue, 6608-6652 Sussex Avenue, 3802 Hastings Street, 6488 Byrnepark Drive, and 7492 Holly Street.

According to a release, “these projects are part of a $19 billion housing investment by the B.C. government.”

Although the province has advertised these projects as “affordable homes,” it did not specify details surrounding costs for potential buyers in its release.
