Old-fashioned gas war heats up in South Langley

It’s been many years since we’ve seen a good old-fashioned gas war in Metro Vancouver, but it seems a couple of stations have been battling it out south of the Fraser River.

In Langley, some lucky drivers were paying as much as 60 cents less per litre of regular gas than the going rate of almost everywhere else in the Lower Mainland Monday.

And while we’re used to paying a lot for almost everything in Metro Vancouver, with gas as high as $2.10 per litre lately, cars have been lining up to get to the pumps at two stations on 200 Street and 24th Avenue as word gets out that prices have been down to $1.49 for a litre of regular gas.

One driver CityNews spoke to, Tony, turned up at the station Tuesday morning hoping to see that number again so he could fill up his pick-up truck.

“It probably saves me about 60 bucks,” he said. “And they ran out of regular gas a couple days ago, and they were selling premium at the price of their regular.”

He says he’ll keep watching the two stations as they jockey for business.

And while prices were back up to $1.97 per litre of regular Tuesday morning, another driver CityNews spoke with points out it’s still cheaper than elsewhere.

When he arrived to fill up his car Monday, he says there were about 30 cars ahead of him.

“I came here and I found the wait was a bit too long. I had to go elsewhere. So, I’ve come this morning and the price this morning, it’s still cheaper than even Costco,” he said Tuesday.

Other drivers opted to wait it out at the station, hoping to see the magical number come back online some time Tuesday. Some are even putting just a few dollars worth of gas in their tanks, hoping to see the number change shortly.
