British Columbia’s police oversight body has been called in after a man was seriously injured after an exchange of gunfire with police in West Vancouver early Monday morning.
According to the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO), around 3 a.m. the West Vancouver Police Department responded to reports of an impaired driver near the Highway 1 westbound off-ramp at 15 Street.
Police say gunshots were exchanged between officers and the man, the suspect also being struck by a police vehicle. The suspect was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
It is not clear if the suspect’s injuries are due to gunshots or the vehicle collision.
The IIO has been called in to investigate the actions of the police officers involved. The organization is brought in to investigate cases where police actions contribute to the death or serious injury of a civilian.
The police situation has left the exit ramp off the Upper Levels Highway closed for several hours. The Taylor Way exit can be used as a detour.
