Periodic Highway 4 closures on Vancouver Island begin

Periodic closures along Vancouver Island’s Highway 4, which was forced to close for some time due to a wildfire last month, have begun as repair and safety work continues.

For the next several weeks, the highway will be closed between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays for rock-scaling work.

The B.C. Ministry of Transportation says there are no planned closures for weekends, including the B.C. Day long weekend.

It adds periodic closures will take place until mid-August.

The detour route between Lake Cowichan and Port Alberni remains open as crews conduct their work.

The resumption of intermittent closures comes after a stretch of Highway 4 at Cameron Lake Bluff was shut Sunday afternoon over concerns that wind made it dangerous for the cranes that hold protective mesh keeping debris off the highway.

The highway is the main route connecting the communities of Tofino, Ucluelet, and Port Alberni to the rest of Vancouver Island. It was first closed due to the Cameron Bluffs Fire on June 6.
