Vancouver first responders rescue dog trapped on apartment ledge

A prized pooch was rescued from up high on an apartment building ledge in Vancouver Friday, as first responders worked together to get a dog back to its owners.

Speaking to CityNews Saturday, Scott Rose, chair of public engagement for Vancouver Firefighters IAFF Local 18, explains the Mount Pleasant rescue was made by the Vancouver Fire Rescue Services Ladder 3 team.

“The reason why the dog was on the balcony was not clear,” Rose said. “Nobody was aware of how or why the dog got to where it got to, but Ladder 3, with Vancouver police, made sure it was safe.”

Rose said police officers used an age-old trick — treats — to lure the pup closer to officers, “and a VPD member was able to make the grab and save the dog.”

The rescue drew quite a crowd, Rose says.

“Apparently there was a crowd of 30 to 50 people watching as they made the snag.

“The dog was actually really treat motivated, so they were able to just use some treats to lure it. The owner helped them figure that out,” he said.

Rose adds, that if you think you might have a pet that’s “a bit more adventurous,” a good idea would be to block off any areas that a dog might be able to get through.

“[Make sure] if you have larger slats on your roof deck, such as metal ones, make sure it’s blocked off so your dog can’t go on a little adventure like this pup did.”
