BC Ferries cancels some sailings between Tsawwassen and Duke Point

BC Ferries has cancelled two sailings between Tsawwassen and Duke Point Friday afternoon, with the possibility for more cancellations as another vessel is experiencing mechanical issues.

A tweet from the corporation explains the Coastal Renaissance is having “mechanical difficulty with the ship’s main engine.”

As a result, the 3:15 p.m. sailing leaving Tsawwassen and the 5:45 p.m. sailing leaving Duke Point have been cancelled.

The service says the 8:15 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen and the 10:45 p.m. sailing from Duke Point are at risk of being cancelled.

The corporation notes that it is working at fixing the problem, however, it is encouraging “customers without a reservation” to “consider walking on or making alternate travel arrangements for tomorrow (Saturday).”

In an email to CityNews, a spokesperson with the corporation says those already at the terminal will be offered an alternate route or refund.

“Standby travel on sailings for the Tsawwassen-Duke Point route is extremely limited,” the email reads.

This comes after another major vessel that sails between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay was pulled from service for more than a week. It returned to service on Friday, according to the corporation.

In that case, the problem was with an “ineffective blade seal” that prompted the ship to be taken out of the water so engineers could fix it.

It resulted in eight daily sailings missing from the route.

In the case of the Coastal Renaissance, it’s unclear how long sailings will be impacted.
