Child killed by fallen tree at Okanagan Lake campground

A child was killed Saturday after a tree fell on them at the Okanagan Lake Provincial Park South campground.

In an email to CityNews, BC Parks confirmed the death, saying it is “deeply saddened to hear about the tragic incident.”

The parks service added the child was taken to hospital but later died of their injuries.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends following this tragic incident,” BC Parks said.

The service did not confirm the age of the child, however, a caller to CityNews Saturday said the child was around three years old.

The caller says he has been going to the campground for years and claimed the park has been “declining” over the last few years, “and it’s getting worse every year.”

“The park has rebar stuck into the ground with rope of it to cordon off vegetation,” the caller said of the campground.

BC Parks did not comment on the state of the park. CityNews has reached out to the RCMP for more information.
