A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of a three-year-old boy who was killed by a falling tree in the Okanagan last month.
It happened on Saturday, July 29, at the Okanagan Lake Provincial Park South campground.
BC Parks previously told CityNews the child was taken to the hospital but did not survive their injuries.
The GoFundMe has identified the child as Kash Bakker. The campaign says the money raised will go to help the family “cover all financial costs,” noting Kash was one of four boys.
Organizers are hoping to raise $50,000. As of 10 a.m. Friday, the GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $30,000 in four days.
Meanwhile, Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West took to social media earlier this week to share that he was “incredibly saddened to learn” the family at the centre of the tragedy is from his community.
“Heartbreaking, devastating news,” he wrote in a post, adding, “our hearts go out to them.”
“As a parent, I cannot imagine anything worse,” the mayor continued, pointing people who wanted to support the family financially to the GoFundMe page.
The Kelowna RCMP tells CityNews that because the circumstances around what happened don’t appear to be criminal in nature, it is not investigating the death.
CityNews has reached out to both the BC Coroners Service and BC Parks for more information.
