9 people displaced after East Vancouver house fire

Nine people and a pet bunny have been displaced after a Tuesday afternoon house fire in East Vancouver.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services says it was called to a home on East 54th Avenue near Inverness Street just before 3:45 p.m.

Upon arrival, Chief of Operations Brad Hess says crews could see flames coming out of the roof of the building.

“It appears this time the fire did start in the bathroom area, and crews were able to contain the fire damage itself to that area of the upper suite,” he said.

Crews were able to attack the fire quickly with 32 firefighters on the assignment, getting water on the two-storey home within eight minutes of receiving the call.

Although all three families who had been living in the home and their pet bunny will have to sleep somewhere else for the night. Hess says everyone made it out without any injuries — even the firefighters.

While Hess says the cause of the fire remains unknown, he tells CityNews that the home didn’t have a working smoke detector.

“I can’t stress enough how important this is, we’re very fortunate this happened in the daytime and everybody was awake.”

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services says fire damage extended from the bathroom to an attic space in the home, and both floors sustained water damage.
