Lil Tay, social media star from Metro Vancouver is not dead: reports

Editor’s note: In a statement to pop culture outlet TMZ Thursday, Lil Tay confirmed she has not died and was the victim of a ‘jarring misinformation’ Instagram hack.

Social media star Lil Tay, has died at the age of 14, her family announced in a social media post.

A statement announcing her “sudden and tragic passing” was posted on the Metro Vancouver-based personality’s Instagram page Wednesday morning.



“We have no words to express the unbearable loss and indescribable pain. This outcome was entirely unexpected, and has left us all in shock,” the statement says.

The post goes on to say Hope’s brother had also recently passed away, adding to the “unimaginable depth to our grief.”

The family has requested privacy at this time, adding the deaths of the siblings are under investigation. A cause of death has not been provided.

Hope gained social media attention in 2018 with videos showing her — nine years old at the time — holding bundles of cash and driving cars while directing expletive-laden comments at the camera.

Her Instagram account has 3.3. million followers, with her 2018 videos racking up tens of millions of views. Prior to her family’s statement, she had not posted since 2018.
