Science World lights return to Vancouver skyline Thursday night

The lights are back on at Science World after more than a year in the dark. As Sarah Chew reports, that’s because expensive repairs to the dome have been funded by the federal government.

A nighttime staple in the False Creek skyline is returning Thursday, with Science World set to light up once again, just over a year after going dark.

After undergoing upgrades, the iconic Vancouver landmark now boasts three times as many twinkling lights as it did before.

From dusk to dawn, 651 LED lights will illuminate and serve as a symbol of the ongoing improvements being made to the 37-year-old building.

“The dome is an iconic landmark in Vancouver. The lights are part of the dome and I don’t think anybody wants them on faster than we do,” Science World President and CEO Tracy Redies said in December of last year.

The lights on Science World have been out since July of 2022.

Global supply chain issues and the need for specialized work around the geodesic dome were cited as reasons for the delay in getting the lights back on.
