2 Metro Vancouver cities named among top 10 ‘rudest’ in Canada

The stereotype of Canadians being nice may not ring quite as true everywhere in the country, according to a recent survey.

The report from Preply, an online language tutoring service, found that two Metro Vancouver cities are among the top 10 “rudest in Canada.”

Coquitlam and Surrey ranked second and fourth, respectively on the list that assigned an “average rudeness score” to each city. They are the only two B.C. cities on the list that is topped by Vaughan, Ontario, which is just outside Toronto. Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Regina also found themselves in the top 10.

Over 1,500 people in 44 cities were polled as part of the survey over four days in July of this year. Pollsters asked respondents to answer how often they witness 26 “common disrespectful behaviours” and where they happen.

Such actions included being noisy in public, not letting people merge in traffic, not slowing down when driving near pedestrians, and not picking up dog feces.

Those results are calculated into an average to come up with the “rudeness score.” Coquitlam’s rating was 7.85, while Surrey’s was 6.91.

“Coquitlam is known for being damp and having some of the steepest hills in Vancouver, which may leave residents feeling moody and less inclined to fulfill the polite stereotype,” the report stated. “You’re more likely to encounter residents talking on the phone at the checkout or even spitting in public!”

The report also highlighted the top 10 “most polite” cities in Canada, which did not feature any from B.C. Markham, Ontario led that list, with places like Quebec City, Quebec and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia also making appearances.
