Mother of Surrey homicide victim asks public for help on 6th anniversary

Sunday marked six years since 19-year-old Tanner Krupa was found killed in Surrey, B.C. back alley. The Edmonton man’s mother is hoping new tips could bring closure to her family.

The family of a 19-year-old homicide victim is asking the public to help them find answers on the sixth anniversary of his death.

Tanner Krupa of Edmonton was stabbed in 2017 in Surrey, shortly after graduating high school and moving to B.C.

Surrey RCMP responded to an incident on Aug. 20 near the intersection of 127A Street and 69 Ave, where they found Krupa unresponsive.

Six years later, his mother says she still has no idea what happened to her son.

“It’s something you can never in your whole life imagine, that you would be burying a nineteen-year-old child,” said Kim Krupa, Tanner’s mother.

“Our family’s just not the same without his smiling face and without him telling jokes.”

Tanner had been working as a directional driller while saving money to study kinesiology at university. He was three days into his second deployment with a fibre-optic line-laying company when he was killed.

Kim is asking the public to “please do the right thing” and help her figure out why her son was the victim of this attack.

As part of her search, Kim has created a website where people can submit anonymous tips and view images related to Tanner’s murder. The website also features a page dedicated to the charity Kim created in Tanner’s honour titled “Tanner’s Totes.”

The totes, filled with essential items like toiletries and snacks, are handed out by volunteers every year to people in Edmonton who could use the extra supplies.

“It’s just such a feel-good thing when I do it, I just feel like he’s there with us,” said Kim.
