ICBC shares tips to keep kids safe when going back to school

It’s back-to-school time in B.C. next week, and ICBC has come out with a list of tips for drivers to help keep kids safe as they start the new year.

The insurance corporation says school zones and playgrounds are set to be flooded with children next week, so it’s important to remember that the speed limit in school zones is 30 kilometres per hour between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

In playground zones, that limit is in effect from dawn until dusk.

It also reminds drivers to leave their phones alone and watch for children walking or cycling. It says before getting into your car, you should do a quick walk around to ensure no small kids are hidden from your view.

Always ensure your headlights, brake lights, and turn indicator lights are visible and in good working order.

If your children walk to school alone, make sure they are familiar with their route ahead of time.

ICBC also encourages those who drop off their child in a school zone to ensure they get out of the car on the side that is closest to the sidewalk.

According to ICBC, 3 children are killed each year, and 359 are injured while walking or cycling. In Vancouver alone, 56 children are injured in crashes while walking or cycling.
