Hullo adds long weekend sailings

Hullo has announced additional ferry sailings between downtown Vancouver and Nanaimo for the Labour Day long weekend.

The company is offering four sailings out of Vancouver and four the other way each day starting Thursday through to Monday.

The sailings will depart Nanaimo at 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 4:30 p.m., and 8:30 p.m., while boats leaving Vancouver are scheduled to depart at 8 a.m., 12 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 10:30 p.m.

“We understand the demand that arises on long weekend travel, so our goal is to provide an additional friendly and fast option for travel between the mainland and Vancouver Island,” Hullo CEO Alastair Caddick said Thursday.

“The feedback from the majority of the guests I have personally had the chance to meet either at the terminal or on board has been so encouraging. We thank all of our guests for their feedback and support, as we continue to optimize our service to meet the needs of our communities.”

For the remainder of September, the company says it will offer three daily sailings from each side. Nanaimo sailings will leave at 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 4:30 p.m., while Vancouver departures are set for 8 a.m., 12 p.m., 6:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Hullo is also announcing select late-night sailings starting this fall for “special events in Vancouver,” with more information expected at a later date.

The new high-speed passenger ferry service launched in mid-August. However, Hullo’s start was not all smooth sailing, with its inaugural trips cancelled due to weather and a power outage experienced at the berth in Nanaimo.

Travel time between the mainland and Vancouver Island is estimated to be about 70 minutes — almost a half hour faster than a BC Ferries service from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo.
