Suspect charged after car chase from New West to Vancouver

Police in New Westminster say a 41-year-old man is facing several charges after a series of events, including a pursuit into Vancouver, last week.

According to investigators, police received reports from someone who said they saw their friend’s stolen car drive by them around 8 a.m. on Aug. 25.

The vehicle was later found parked outside a store, where police say officers saw a man run out of the business “carrying suspected stolen property with a security guard running after him.”

The suspect is said to have gotten back into the car and driven off, with New Westminster Police officers in an unmarked vehicle following close behind.

During the course of the chase, police say the suspect “rammed one of the NWPD vehicles,” though damage is said to be minimal with no injuries reported.

The suspect was followed into Vancouver, where police say a VPD K-9 unit was able to make an arrest.

“Dealing with mobile stolen vehicles can be a high-risk venture for police as we want to avoid dangerous pursuits that can put the public at risk,” said Deputy Chief Const. Paul Hyland, who adds, “We have had a few of these incidents recently.”

Mathew Christopher Nicholls of Langley has been charged with one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000, one count of theft under $5,000, and one count of breach of release order in connection with this incident.
