Vancouver’s alcohol on beaches pilot to end Tuesday

The Labour Day long weekend typically marks the unofficial end to summer, and this year in Vancouver, it also marks the final moments of yet another pilot project.

Beachgoers in the city will want to take note: the alcohol on beaches program is set to end next week, with Monday, Sept. 4 being the final day.

Vancouver’s latest pilot began June 1, with the city saying the goal was to “test responsible consumption of alcohol at appropriate beach locations.”

People have been allowed to consume alcohol at seven beaches — Jericho Beach, Spanish Banks, Locarno Beach, Second Beach, Kitsilano Beach, Trout Lake Beach, and New Brighton Beach.

Throughout the past few months, the Vancouver Park Board says staff have been monitoring conditions at these sites.

“Staff are now reviewing the findings from the pilot, which includes feedback from the public and staff responsible for maintaining site safety and cleanliness,” the Vancouver Park Board said Friday.

It notes staff will take these findings and share them with commissioners “at a later date to inform future decision-making around drinking on beaches.”

While the alcohol on beaches pilot is coming to an end, people can still enjoy an adult beverage at many of Vancouver’s parks from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
