Burnaby RCMP look for suspected Rolex thief

Mounties in Burnaby are looking for a man they believe stole a $7,500 Rolex after a Facebook Marketplace exchange at Lougheed Mall Friday.

They say the victim was with a family member when they met up with the suspect in a public area near Lougheed Town Centre.

According to police, the victim says the suspect did not buy the watch at the first meeting but then asked to meet up again the next day, saying his mother might be interested in purchasing the item.

This time, he tried on the Rolex and then ran away while still wearing it. Officers describe the suspect as 6′ tall, slim, and about 20-25 years old.

The RCMP is warning Facebook Marketplace buyers and sellers to take precautions when meeting.

“We recommend taking every safety precaution possible when making online marketplace purchases, including meeting buyers or sellers outside our detachment or one of our Community Police Offices,” said Corp. Mike Kalanj. “If you can identify this suspect, please call our investigators.”
