B.C. home gas bills to drop next month

If you pay for natural gas in B.C., expect to see your monthly bill go down next month.

FortisBC announced Monday it has been given approval by the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) to drop its rates for all customers, beginning Oct. 1.

The utility says average monthly bills are expected to decrease by about $7, or eight per cent.

“We understand that energy costs are an important consideration in household budgets and so we strive to deliver gas safely and reliably at the lowest reasonable cost,” said Joe Mazza, FortisBC’s vice-president of energy supply and resource development.

“This decrease will provide customers with some relief on the cost of gas as we head into the colder fall and winter season.”

This latest decrease brings the cost per gigajoule (GJ) to $2.23 from $3.16, it says, with the average household consuming around 90 GJ per year.

Fortis says it reviews the cost of gas with the BCUC every three months. Because it acquires natural gas at market prices, costs for customers are affected by the weather, industry supply and demand, and other economic conditions.

“We do not mark up the cost of gas, so customers pay what we pay,” it said.

The BCUC will review the gas rate again in December, the gas company said.
