Montreal police arrest man in Vancouver in connection with 2022 Chinatown murder

The Montreal police force (SPVM) has arrested a suspect in Vancouver in connection with a murder that occurred in Montreal’s Chinatown last fall.

The suspect, 46-year-old Dwayne Joseph, was the subject of a Canada-wide arrest warrant.

He was arrested in Vancouver, then repatriated to Montreal by SPVM investigators on Tuesday. Joseph is scheduled to appear at the Montreal courthouse Wednesday to face charges of second-degree murder.

This is the third arrest in this case. Marckinson Cherise, 42, was also charged with second-degree murder in March 2023. Mame Abdul Aziz Ndiaye, 31, was charged with robbery in February 2023.


BACKGROUND: Man stabbed in Montreal’s Chinatown area


On Nov. 6, 2022, at around 10 p.m., an altercation involving several individuals broke out at the intersection of Clark Street and De La Gauchetière West, in Chinatown.

A man in his 30s was stabbed in the upper body, police say, and the suspects immediately left the scene. The victim was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It was the 34th murder in 2022 on the island of Montreal.
