Strong storm system to hit B.C.’s southern coast Sunday: Ministry

A “strong storm system’ is expected to hit B.C.’s southern coast by the end of the weekend.

The Ministry of Forests has issued a “high streamflow advisory,” and says the storm is expected to arrive at parts of Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, the Howe Sound, and the Lower Mainland by Sunday.

“The storm will have the potential to produce moderate to heavy precipitation across Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, Howe Sound, Lower Mainland, and the Lower Fraser Valley from Sunday night into the middle of next week,” the ministry stated.

The western portion of Vancouver Island is expected to see up to 150 millimetres of rainfall between Sunday and Tuesday, while projections have other affected areas seeing between 20 and 60 millimetres in the same period of time.

The ministry warns this storm could have a drastic effect on rivers in areas that have experienced drought as of late.

“Rivers are expected to rise rapidly in response to rainfall starting late Sunday into Monday, with peak flows occurring Monday through Wednesday, depending on rainfall timing and watershed size and response,” it explained.

As a result, the ministry asks residents in affected areas to stay clear of fast-flowing rivers and any riverbanks that could be unstable and to avoid recreational activities near rivers and streams.
