The death of Ridge Meadows RCMP Const. Rick O’Brien Friday is being felt by officers throughout the province as they participate in the Run to Remember over the weekend.
The annual event, which sees officers run from Abbotsford to Victoria, pays tribute to police killed in the line of duty, and this year, an extra kilometre has been added to the 130 km route in O’Brien’s honour.

Detective Darryl Young with the Abbotsford Police spoke with CityNews as he was running, saying everyone running is “crushed” by O’Brien’s death.
“It was a tragedy yesterday, and the sad reality of it is we lost a member yesterday, but we were already running for over 100 members who have given their lives for their communities,” he said.
Young says the purpose of the run is to ensure the sacrifices of the fallen officers are always remembered.
The run comes ahead of the BC Law Enforcement Memorial Service, which will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Victoria Sunday.
