Charges laid in death of Maple Ridge RCMP officer

A man has been charged after the death of a Ridge Meadows RCMP officer who was fatally shot while executing a warrant in Coquitlam on Sept. 22.

The Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says Nicholas Bellemare, 25, of Coquitlam has been charged with one count of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder with a firearm. Bellemare is currently in custody and set to appear in court on Oct. 3.

A second RCMP officer was shot and wounded, and a third officer sustained injuries, IHIT says. Both wounded officers have since been released from hospital.

IHIT says the suspect was also shot and wounded during the altercation.
