A memo sent to health care facilities in B.C. indicates enhanced face mask guidelines will be put in place beginning next week.
According to a memo obtained by CityNews, “continuous medical masking” will be required for “health care workers, visitors, contractors, and volunteers in all patient, client, and resident care areas” starting Oct. 3.
However, the memo says masking won’t be required for patients, clients, and residents, unless “directed by a health care worker or based on personal choice.”
It’s currently unclear if a person will be denied entry if they refuse to mask up at the direction of a health care worker.

The expectation is part of several enhanced infection prevention and control measures, though the memo says rapid testing and physical distancing will not be reinstated.
Proof of vaccination will continue to not be required for patients, residents, clients or visitors. Mandatory immunization measures will remain in effect for health care workers, only.
Health Minister Adrian Dix would not comment on the memo, but says masks are a key tool in keeping people safe in health care settings.
“Ensuring that people in that position have the maximum protection possible in this season is important,” Dix said.
Other control measures being reinstated include enhanced cleaning of high touch surfaces, handwashing and symptom screening for people entering health care facilities.
In advance of the Oct. 3 start date, the memo states the Provincial Health Services Authority Supply Chain is pre-positioning medical masks, hand sanitizer and other PPE supplies in facilities.
Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry will provide more information in an announcement Thursday.
