Coquitlam police presence prompted by threat to high school

Mounties in Coquitlam say a heavy police presence outside Centennial Secondary School Thursday was due to a “third-party threat.”

The Coquitlam RCMP says officers responded to the report at the school on Poirier Street just before 11:30 a.m. It led to the high school, along with the nearby Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex being put under a hold and secure.

Police say they have located a  “youth from another jurisdiction” who is believed to be behind the threat, saying there will be further investigation into it.

“There is no continued threat to the public or the school,” the RCMP said in a release.

Corp. Alexa Hodgins says threats to schools are taken “very seriously,” which was the reasoning behind the hold and secure orders.

“This was to ensure the safety of the public as police continued the investigation,” she said.
