Frank the donkey finds new home

A 22-year-old donkey that got a bit of attention last month thanks to the BC SPCA has finally found a forever home, the society says.

According to the organization, Frank — whose name is now Charlie — caught the attention of Sheri and Kate online, just one week after Sheri’s 40-year-old rescue donkey died.

“I saw a photo of him online and knew right away that he would fit in with my barn,” said Sheri, who adds Frank is “quite the affectionate donkey.”

“When it is breakfast time, he brays very loudly and then begins trotting over to get some scratches. Charlie loves to cruise around and has even figured out how to open the feed room door, so we’ve had to limit his time hanging out in the barn! He is the most energetic donkey I have ever had.”

The SPCA notes Sheri has adopted several cats over the years, but never a farm animal, of which she has a few.

One of those other animals happens to be a pony named Frankie, the SPCA says, hence the name change, as Sheri “worried things could get confusing fast when Frankie the pony comes to visit from his current home in Southlands.”

Frank was surrendered after his previous owners were no longer able to support his needs.

The SPCA says the donkey has pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), or Equine Cushing’s Disease, which is described as a hormone disorder. If left untreated, it can lead to complications and other serious health issues, the SPCA adds.

Frank also had “severe dental disease” and several missing teeth. Both have since been treated, the SPCA explains.

The SPCA explains Charlie is now living happily on Sheri’s farm with the other animals — including his “new best friend Millie, a miniature mule who Sheri rescued a week after Charlie came home.”

“The playful duo love to hang out together on a trail beside the barn and even run around in the outdoor ring on the property. According to Sheri, Charlie is super talkative and loves his people – but mostly he loves Millie and she is never far from his side,” the SPCA said.
