Burnaby skate park to honour late councillor Nick Volkow

The Metro Skate Park near Metrotown in Burnaby is being renamed in honour of a beloved and long-serving city councillor who passed away.

The site will officially be named Nick Volkow Skate Park during a ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 14, in memory of the councillor whom the city says “dedicated so much of his life to building a better community for all residents of all ages and lifestyles.”

Volkow passed away at the age of 67 in June 2020 after a battle with brain cancer.

He had spent eight terms on council and developed a reputation as a “straight shooter” in civic politics. During his time as a councillor, he helped push the city to build a pair of skate parks in the early 2000s, and also establish several youth centres.

After word of his passing in 2020, Mayor Mike Hurley told CityNews Volkow was well-loved.

“He was very passionate about the issues within council. He really fought hard to get things for kids, like skateboard parks,” the mayor said at the time. “He was very passionate about Indigenous issues, doing the right thing for people. He was an incredible advocate.”
