Vancouver Chinatown homicide victim identified

The victim of a homicide in Vancouver’s Chinatown neighbourhood last month has been identified by police.

The Vancouver Police Department says Ricky Martinez was found “gravely injured” in the area of Carrall and East Hastings streets just after 5 a.m. on Sept. 28.

He was taken to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.

To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the 44-year-old’s death. Homicide investigators spent hours on scene collecting evidence. They continue to look into the matter, the VPD adds.

“While we don’t have a suspect in custody at this time, we’re hoping and trust that the evidence that we collect will lead us to the person who is responsible for this. We’ve got some more work to do though,” Sgt. Steve Addison said on Sept. 28.

“Homicide investigations can be complex. They’re the most serious investigations that we conduct and we’ve got to do it right.”

This was Vancouver’s 12th homicide of 2023.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the VPD’s homicide team at 604-717-2500.
