Grizzly bear spotted near Whistler elementary school

Mounties in Whistler are advising the public to keep a look out after a grizzly bear was spotted near a local elementary school Wednesday morning.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Whistler RCMP says the animal was spotted on the lower playground of Myrtle Philip Community School.

Police say the BC Conservation Officer Service (BC COS) has been notified, but note the animal has not been found.

In an email to CityNews, the BC COS says the bear was seen feeding on “natural foods in a soccer field” near the school. The agency assures there is no risk to the public, advising anyone who spots the animal to give it space.

School District 48 says in a statement that students, staff and families were notified of the bear sighting, with recess being held indoors earlier in the day.

“The school is working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of all students, staff and families and to monitor the situation closely,” the district said.
