In the latest in a batch of early-season moves, the Vancouver Canucks have traded defenceman Jack Rathbone to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Rathbone, 24, spent the last four seasons in the Canucks organization. In two games this season with the Abbotsford Canucks of the AHL, he had one goal.
In 28 career NHL games, the five-foot-10, 177-pound defenceman had two goals and three assists for five points. In 86 career AHL games with Abbotsford and the Utica Comets, Rathbone has 18 goals and 46 assists for 64 points.
“It’s been a tough couple years for him in Vancouver not getting an opportunity,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said Tuesday. “I felt (this) was a change of scenery for him. I respect him and he’s a good kid, so I wish him all the best.”
The Boston native played two seasons at Harvard University, registering 14 goals and 39 assists for 53 points in 61 games. Rathbone was drafted in the fourth round (95th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft by the Canucks.
Minor-league forward Karel Plasek went to Pittsburgh in the deal as well. In exchange, the Canucks acquired 27-year-old defenceman Mark Friedman and 23-year-old Ty Glover.
Friedman has played 65 career NHL games split between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers — putting together four goals and eight assists in the process.
The 185-pound defenceman was drafted 86th overall by the Flyers in the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft.
