A GoFundMe campaign that was launched to support the family of a boy who was hit by a recycling truck in Pitt Meadows and died has well surpassed its initial $5,000 goal.
More than $49,000 was raised in less than 24 hours in honour of the 12-year-old, who has been identified by the fundraiser and various social media posts as Chace Nicol.
“He was one of my son’s best friends, spent many holidays with him and his family,” wrote GoFundMe organizer Stephanie St Arnaud. “Let’s help the family with unexpected expenses during this time.”

The Ridge Meadows RCMP says the crash happened Wednesday around 8:30 a.m. in the area of 116A Avenue and 196B Street. Despite life-saving measures by paramedics and fire crews, the child was pronounced dead.
Mounties say the driver of the recycling truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
A memorial has been growing where Chace was fatally hit. People have been leaving flowers, cards, and other items in memory of the boy, who was an avid young football player.

Kim Alford, who’s lived in the neighbourhood for nearly three decades, was among those paying their respects to Chace.
She tells CityNews kids are always biking on the street by her home.
“They go by in front of my house, I’m out in my garden,” Alford said. “To see something like this, it just hurts. So I had to come and pay my respects to the young man who lost his life so early.”
